On Patients: I am grateful for the privilege to be able to serve my patients. I feel so incredibly blessed to have had this opportunity for the last 33 years. My patients are the reason I endure the rigors of my profession and the frustrations of our healthcare system. They educate me, humble me, enrich me, and at times entertain me.

On Cardiology: Having practiced general internal medicine for 27 years, I have had a unique opportunity to see the whole spectrum of medical specialties. Cardiology has been my favorite for most of my career. It is a very exciting time to be in this field because of all the technological and pharmacological advances. It is very gratifying to see how proper application of medical science can do such dramatic good for patients.

On Yakima Heart Center: I have practiced in quite a few places in my career. This is by far the best; I finally got it right! My partners are smart, hardworking, dependable and dedicated to doing the right thing for their patients. Our extenders, nursing, and support staff are amazing. I couldn't ask for a better place to work.

Donald Ballew MD
Donald Ballew MD

Thank you

The Yakima Heart Center would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Donald H. Ballew, MD, for his years of service to our community, our hospital and our patients.

A co-founder of the Yakima Heart Center, Dr. Ballew was a pioneer of cardiac medicine in the Yakima Valley—helping start the Valley’s first cardiac care unit at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.  Through his vision, the Yakima Heart Center has stayed on the cutting edge of life-saving cardiac care for nearly 40 years

Duane A. Monick MD, FACC
Duane A. Monick MD, FACC

Thank you

The Yakima Heart Center would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Duane A. Monick, MD, for more than 30 years of service to our community, our hospitals and our patients.

Dr. Monick pioneered the use of the electronic medical records at the Heart Center—and in the Yakima Valley—at a time when office notes were all handwritten, improving communication among medical providers. He also brought coronary angioplasty to Yakima, which over the years has helped to improve the lives of countless Valley residents.

Personal History: My wife and I have 7 grandchildren and one on the way. We spend all of our spare time with them.

Local Activities: Over the years I have done it all- hiking, camping, fishing, skiing, boating to Alaska with friends.

Professional Interests: My patients

Specialty Interests: My patient’s heart

On Patients: My patients are incredible. We try to find out their interests, I have heard stories from World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam.

On Cardiology: I have been around since the beginning, basically. I came into practice in 1975 at which time all we could do is operate on the heart. With new procedures, such as angioplasty, ablation therapy for arrhythmias, and all of the other miracles we can do with the heart are still fascinating to me. I am very impressed by what we can get by with.

On Yakima Heart Center: I have the greatest partners in the world. Even after all these years, all the way back to 1975, we have never cared about anything but the patients. In these days of shook and jive, the patient is always the number one concern. My most proud accomplishment is being a member of the Yakima Heart Center all these years, with the quality of partners and their caring attitude and with the respect they are with by everybody in town.
